Hey very cool tutorial! I've been looking for a way to do some toon-shading on some 3d backgrounds/environments to animate my 2d characters over, so I'll be trying this out. I've messed with Blender a bit before, but I've heard (as you also said) the new interface is more friendly, so I'm happy about that. Wish me luck!

Hah, quite true, working on projects like apps gets really hard once time actually becomes an issue...

Thanks for sharing. I've never really thought of it that way. I've always tried to make apps that I THINK people would use. Maybe I should just make apps that I definitely would use. That's it! My next app will be something I will use!

"I want to love what I do, and do what I love" ... so true! Game Development takes up soooo much time, especially when you're doing it all on your own. That's the most important reason for me to only work on projects I really enjoy.

Great words to go by. That's what i'm more or less trying to do, but I never thought of it that way. lol

Thanks for the reply Luke,

I've tried a couple of pixel art editors (Sprite Something and Pixel Dude). Pixel Dude is my current favourite - Sprite Something seems to crash far too often.

I'm definitely interested in the scaling you mentioned...

Hi Chris,

Thanks! Plan is definitely to release the pixel art app — not expecting massive sales, but still worthwhile I think. As for resolutions, I'm doing everything using assets where the perceived pixel is an actually asset pixel. So I'm scaling in cocos2d for the game and working at 240x160 (same as a GBA) — it's nice not having to worry about retina. I'm also working in actual pixels for the app, and scaling in CoreImage. Think I'll make next week's tech tip about scaling. :)

Hi Luke,

Your new game looks great. I love the concept and your pixel art is looking fantastic. I'm definitely interested in how you handle the multiplayer.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind :)

1) Are you planning on releasing your pixel art app? It looks like it has a nice workflow.

2) How are you handling resolutions for your pixel art? Are you creating retina versions and just scaling down or are you creating 2 versions of each asset? Or something else?

Cheers

I agree with the previous posts and wanted to add a few thoughts. I have never had the opportunity to go freelance full time because I have a family and all the responsibilities that go with that. I've been tempted many times to walk away from jobs in pursuit of my dreams, but responsibility always outweighed ambition. However, I've been following for a bit now and believe that you are a creative and talented individual. Working "for the man" may seem like a backwards step at first, but it may be the best way for exceptional individuals to get the recognition and, therefore, the opportunities they deserve. After spending my career working with various companies, I've learned skills that I otherwise would never have obtained. All this has culminated in an opportunity to do professionally what I've been trying to do indie (unsuccessfully) for years: gaming. I wish for the best for you in your new position and hope that this door may lead to others down the road. Keep up the good work and you will have your own successful company soon enough. Maybe you will even have the opportunity to open doors for some others!
